Brand research

Generally, it is hard to imagine any exchange of goods in the history of human civilization that would not be underpinned by the symbolic processes which today we sum up under the concept of a brand. A brand is a subtle psychological mechanism which helps us to put our lives in order and organize our relationships with the world. From the earliest times when people started to exchange goods, they needed to employ some strategy to make their choices. Initially, that was most likely just the knowledge of who the other party to the exchange was. It is precisely this information about the origin of the goods (badge of origin) which lies at the heart of the symbolic process taking place in the modern consumer’s mind: what today we call a brand. Even when buying non-branded goods such as parsley or carrots we do not just go to any old shop but will try, if possible, to buy at a shop where we have already made repeated good purchases in the past and, perhaps, even know a bit about the origin of their produce.
